Lviv regional children’s hospital OKHMATDYT has won an international Ukrainian-Polish project, enabling it to receive modern equipment and a powerful telemedicine centre for minimally invasive surgery, in particular, laparoscopic and endoscopic operations.

The cross-border project is called «Joint Initiative of Mazowieckie specialized hospital in Ostroleka and Lviv regional children’s clinical hospital OKHMATDYT for increasing the availability of medical services in the field of modern surgery». The initiative is funded by the cooperation program Poland – Belarus – Ukraine 2014-2020. According to the project’s conditions, the hospital in Lviv will be provided with expert equipment for several operating rooms, training of doctors and a modern telemedicine centre for consultations, so that the most innovative operations will be available to everyone.

According to Fedir Yurochko, a doctor from OKHMATDYT participating in the initiative, cross-border cooperation between Lviv hospital and the hospital in Ostroleka is not just about equipment. It’s also new contacts, exchange of experience, and emotional support of neighbours.

«We are pleased with new opportunities that make us stronger and better», – says Yurochko.

Financial support is provided by the EU and the Lviv regional council. The project will be implemented together with the Mazowieckie specialized hospital in Ostroleka (Poland).

In general, the project will improve three important areas.

New modern operating room

The new operating room, offered to OKHMATDYT, will be equipped with modern medical equipment for laparoscopic, microsurgical and endoscopic operations. Thanks to them, doctors will be able to perform the most difficult invasions.

Innovative surgical tools from Karl Storz (a German medical device company) will be provided to urologists and ENT specialists. The latter are already mastering a new technology for ear microsurgery. Two more devices for anaesthesia the hospital will receive are able to minimize the risks for young patients and monitor the child’s condition during the operation in the most accurate way. This means that in OKHMADYT, the number of minimally invasive operations will increase, children will start recovering faster, and most importantly, they will be able to go home two or three days after the surgery.

Conferences for doctors

As part of the cross-border project, OKHMATDYT hospital is holding two conferences to share experiences. The first one has already taken place in Ostroleka, the next will be held in Lviv. There, professionals will meet to share their best practices.

Modern telemedicine centre

To maintain the functioning and development of the two participating hospitals, a modern telemedicine centre will be opened in Lviv. For this purpose, OKHMATDYT’s conference hall was modernized to become a room where the centre would start working. It’s here that Lviv pediatric surgeons will conduct laparoscopy training and share medical knowledge with their colleagues. And most importantly, consultations of medical experts and live broadcasts will take place right in the operating room.

Importantly, in the first days of the current pandemic, Lviv OKHMATDYT doctors received from their Polish neighbours a lot of protective suits, medical masks, disinfectants and a portable ultrasound machine. The project also helped to open a Covid-department in a few days and start accepting the first patients from the whole Lviv region.

Created and supported with the financial support of the European Union. The Municipal non-profit enterprise of the Lviv regional council «Lviv regional children’s clinical hospital «OKHMATDYT» is exclusively responsible for the content, and it does not reflect the position of the European Union.
