Koliivshchyny Square, which is Lviv’s smallest--just 650 square meters was reopened after the finish of the reconstruction works. Researchers discovered the remains of a well, which they reconstructed. On the well are names of people who used to live and work there, including several names in Hebrew – recalling that this was a heavily Jewish district before the Holocaust.
The square is particularly valuable for the city because right here, experts of the research centre «Rescue Archaeological Service» found the remains of ancient buildings and evidence of people who had once lived there.In addition, new street furniture was installed and greenery was planted in the area. The reconstruction project was implemented by the private company “Scientific-production firm «Rutenia».
In particular, instead of benches, moveable green chairs appeared in the renovated square As Pavlo Bohaichyk, the director of Lviv municipal enterprise “Bureau of the heritage”, reported during the stream of Tvoemisto.tv, first example of such type already exists near the market «Dobrobut», located on Rybna street.
«There’s a small park with similar furniture there. Generally, it’s quite widespread in Europe. A street lantern here is a replica of old Lviv lanterns, where you can also sit, and it harmoniously fits this space. It hasn’t been here ever before. Here, additional information will be posted to give you more sense of the square itself», - he says.
Simultaneously, the question of the renaming of Koliyivshchyny square remains open. According to Pavlo Bohaichyk, the consensus must be reached during the ongoing discussions.
Let us remind that the square was reconstructed in frames of the cooperation between the city and Jewish organisations in a project «Shared responsibility for common heritage» (ReHERIT), with the grant support of the European Union. The total cost amounted to UAH 3.2 millions.
